Dear President Obama: Pardon Jack Johnson

By Ref | August 15, 2009

An Open Letter to President Barack Obama:
By Amir Peay

For those of you boxing fans who are familiar with the story of the first African American heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, and his unjust persecution for romantic ties to a white woman, then you may well be aware of the current drive to secure him a posthumous Presidential Pardon.  This drive, initiated by Senator John McCain, has resulted in a resolution passed by both the Senate and House of Representatives, and all that is left is for President Barack Obama to sign it into law.  Until now the White House has not issued a statement on this matter, and as a fan of both boxing and Jack Johnson, I feel that it is my responsibility to get other fans together to help show our support for this resolution.

To help support the posthumous Presidential Pardon for Jack Johnson, please copy the letter below, starting with the subject header, and paste it in the contact page for the White House at http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/.

Subject:  Posthumous Pardon for Boxer Jack Johnson

Dear President Obama:

On July 29th, 2009, the House of Representatives approved a resolution urging a presidential pardon for boxer Jack Johnson, the late black heavyweight champion who was imprisoned because of his romantic ties with a white woman.

This approval comes a month after the Senate approval and five years after the resolution was sponsored by Senator John McCain.

The resolution’s House sponsor, New York Republican Peter King stated,

“Jack Johnson is a trailblazer and a legend, whose boxing career was cut short due to unjust laws and racial persecution.  I urge the president to do the right thing and take the final step and grant his pardon.”

The resolution states that Johnson should receive a posthumous pardon “for the racially motivated conviction in 1913 that diminished the athletic, cultural, and historic significance of Jack Johnson and unduly tarnished his reputation.”

The pardon would “expunge a racially motivated abuse of the prosecutorial authority of the federal government from the annals of criminal justice in the United States.”

Jack Johnson was the first African American heavyweight champion of the world and one of the all time greatest champions in boxing history.

As a fan of both Jack Johnson and the sport of boxing, I am personally asking you to do the right thing and to grant him this pardon.

Sincerely,

(Your Name)
